Dating Zenith pocket watch via serial number

The Manufacture – History History of Zenith watches Browse the history of the Zenith Manufacture online, from its foundation by Georges Favre-Jacot and the creation of the first pocket chronograph. This legendary wristwatch chronometer movement equipped with a small seconds function was to earn no less than prizes. It is the only one capable of measuring short times to the nearest tenth of a second, thanks to its balance oscillating at a frequency of 36, vibrations per hour. Production of the El Primero caliber could begin once more. Major watch brands were eager to get a fresh start in this field by equipping their timepieces with this legendary movement. The first Zenith caliber to be developed using Computer Assisted Design technology, it was voted movement of the year by the trade press due to its extreme slenderness and its proven reliability. More than ever before, the now visible oscillations bring to life the magic of a mechanical watch beating at a high frequency.

On a personal level, we are enormous fans of the classic products of the Zenith concern and have long held the belief that these are among the highest quality to have been offered by any of the top tier houses. Without any doubt at all, this watch stands very favourable comparison with anything of the same age by Rolex, IWC or Omega, yet it can be purchased for a substantially smaller amount of money.

We tend to think of Zenith as the horological equivalent of a small independent vineyard that produces the finest standard of wine but has not yet been discovered by the all powerful Robert Parker. Aficionados will have been aware of our fictional vineyard for decades, but the man in the street is unaware of its limited scale, in-house bottled production. And so it is with Zenith. Founded in , the company is one of the oldest of its type and within the industry is venerated for its exquisite autonomous movement manufacturing, but to the public at large, its name is unknown.

Inspired by traditional trench coat details dating back to the ’60s, this Raf Simons x Eastpak backpack is made from durable canvas and has a sling shape held in place with a single knotted shoulder strap. It’s accented with asymmetric buttons along the front and a series of pockets and compartments to house your travel pass, notebook and tablet.

An art which finds its expression in the elegance and simplicity of the timepieces, in the subtle harmony of unique, modern design and innovative techniques. In Le Locle, a small Swiss village in the Jura mountains and in the heart of the watchmaking world, Abraham Favre decided to officially register his Manufacture producing timepieces. It was one of the earliest watchmaking companies. From the very start Abraham Favre concentrated on improving the technology of his timepieces, and the quality of the materials employed in their manufacture.

Thanks to his hard work and pioneering spirit, the business expanded and was passed down through eight generations of the Favre family. It was his grandson Henry-Auguste, who in went a step further by going into partnership with Auguste Leuba, a watch dealer from Buttes in the Val-de-Travers. The business remained in the same family over eight generations, through to Then the quartz revolution came along, bringing many changes for the industry.

Favre-Leuba, one of the largest companies of its time, passed through different hands such as Benedom SA and LVMH before finally regaining its independence in Visit the official website of Favre-Leuba.

When this watch first appeared in stock, on first casual glance we presumed that it had a gunmetal case that had been partially nickel plated, leaving the lugs and hinges on the case side in the natural gunmetal bronze colour.

This would have been perfectly fine and is an attractive combination, but upon careful examination, we were pleasantly surprised to find that in fact, the case body is solid silver, with the lugs and hinges in pink gold. If we had been asked to date this watch simply by examining it externally, we would have suggested its period of manufacture as being somewhere between and This watch represents almost the very last of its type and as such, is important.

In common with the majority of the key Swiss horological houses, Zenith found it economically advantageous to ship uncased movements to its agents in the USA and then have these housed in domestically manufactured cases. By adopting this approach, heavy taxes levied on complete watches entering America from Europe could be avoided, resulting in Swiss watches being available to the buying public at still reasonably affordable rates.

Two important points need to be covered for a better understanding of the model numbering scheme. First; the big round “airplaine” dial that was introduced by Zenith came prior to This article will deal with the “Big Black Dial” radios and the numbering scheme which was introduced in late for the model year. It is my belief that the year used to date a radio should track with the “model year” and not with the actual production date.

I offer an analogy:

Zenith has a long history of watchmaking dating back to Zenith has developed more than different movements and has received over patents. Zenith has won well over 2, chronometry prizes in accuracy and precision!

The best place to carry your pocket watch is in your vest pocket with the crystal toward your body. Various types of chains may be used, but whatever type of chain or fob you prefer to wear, the main point to consider is that the watch itself is carried in the pocket where the watch will not be knocked every time you move.

Keep your watch pocket free from dust and lint. By doing so you eliminate the possibility of dust and lint working their way through the watch case into the movement. The wrist watch, as the name implies, belongs on the wrist and performs best when worn at all times, except when one is bathing or washing.

Aug 22, Thank you for posting the excellent and good illustrative photos of your Zenith clock and the movement. Indeed, the movement hanging bracket in the case with two round studs is not seen on old clocks. The two round studs fit nicely into the precision die-cast sockets screwed to the bottom of the movement. Thumb-screws secure the movement to the hanging bracket studs. That is not seen on old clocks. The die-cast parts on your Zenith clock movement are not seen on old French or German clocks.

Precision metal die casting is a more modern technology that the old clock manufacturers were slow to adopt because of the cost of tooling Odd that enith used the old style long pins. The numbers on the movement plate is E3 and were probably put there by the factory that actually made the clock plates and maybe assembled the movement using the specifications designed by Zenith engineers.

Dating Zenith pocket watch Unfortunately the zenith movement numbers didn’t run straight along the timeline and all lists you found in the net are approximations with outliers. Special Series or calibres seems to have sometimes their own reserved number range over years. The member hans61 collectet a lot of real numbers out of the net and after some years he still got no complete answer.
