The host’s Oscar gags – including that excellent Reese Witherspoon line – are rated right here. This piece in the Hollywood Reporter argues that the Academy’s love for Michael Keaton’s meta take-down of his Batman years amounts to the film industry “atoning” for the recent glut of gazillion-dollar grossing men in tights sagas. At Saturday night’s Independent Spirit Awards, Nightcrawler screenwriter railed against “the tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry”, and even Jack Black had a pop at them in his stage-storming opening number cameo.
Ignoring the unusual headgear, fashion observers have been quick to point out that the Australian – who helped write the music for Annie – is very on-trend, with her beige cape and trousers. The Imitation Game screenwriter Graham Moore, who spoke movingly about gay rights, put it best backstage. Let us count the ways: Quote of the night courtesy of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu: It doesn’t allow you to enjoy anything. He said he would be going to Cambridge to see the Hawkings when he gets back to the UK. I’m one of those people who when they see a film I believe what I see on the screen.
So there was a great responsibility to tell their story truthfully and authentically. Any excuse to go back to Cambridge, it’s such a beautiful place.

Hawking was indeed something of a brilliant slacker: He considered my friends to be easy victims and had no compunction in monopolizing the conversation at parties with his controversial opinions. In real life, Hawking had no such classmate; Brian is a composite character. In personal terms, however, they treated him with a gentle consideration which was almost loving.
She did, however, as the movie indicates, study Medieval poets from the Iberian peninsula, and Jane Hawking spends a few passages of her memoir explaining her academic work and her favorite poems. In the movie, as in real life, she is a faithful Christian.

The suspense thriller 8mm is considered a cult film. In , two films he headlined, Lord of War and The Weather Man , failed to find a significant audience despite nationwide releases and good reviews for his performances. In his second-highest-grossing film to date, National Treasure , he plays an eccentric historian who goes on a dangerous adventure to find treasure hidden by the Founding Fathers of the United States. However, Cage dropped out of production shortly afterwards because he felt that he did not have enough time to prepare for the role and director Darren Aronofsky preferred Mickey Rourke for the lead part.
Rourke would go on to receive an Academy Award nomination for his performance.

It was the period when he became afflicted by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a form of motor neurone disease, which led to him being in a wheelchair. In typically segmented fashion, Redmayne says of the first meeting: The actor spent time with Hawking’s family. He also visited patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and asked their families questions about coping with the disability. He watched footage of Hawking and read A Brief History of Time, without grasping all the intricacies of Hawking’s classic text.
Meeting the physicist was one of the last things Redmayne did before the shoot and he was worried that the person he was about to meet was not the character that he had prepared: We’d watched some of the documentary material where his voice was almost incomprehensible. So I could go back to the producers, and more importantly director James Marsh, and say we need to take this on board, but we still didn’t go quite so far because they didn’t want to use subtitles, but it did give me permission to really go and be pretty strong with that, because it was important for Stephen [Hawking] and screenwriter Anthony McCarten that we show the illness in full.

The two are madly in love with one another, and hang out at artistic events with their dancer friend Ulla Heard. The incident has a profound effect on Einar. He has always felt like there was something not quite right; his infertility, his somewhat effeminate manner, his desire for men although his deepest love is reserved for Gerda.

But the same could be said for Eddie Redmayne, the British actor who plays Hawking so elegantly, with such impish charm and frustration as his body descends into motor neurone disease, that we finally — finally — have a bona fide Oscar contender from the film fest that’s been known to breed them. It’s All on YouTube Not that Redmayne, at 5’11” six-foot-two with that shock of red , is a little guy. But his portrayal of Hawking, utterly convincing physically, emotionally and existentially from the film’s first frame to its very last, will forever stand as a very big breakthrough indeed: Redmayne has never been nominated for any major mainstream awards, but if this theory holds, that history will change in a brief amount of time.
And it isn’t just Redmayne who we’ll soon discover in the awards cosmos: Felicity Jones is impeccable as his longtime wife Jane Hawking, upon whose memoir, Travelling to Infinity: Director James Marsh the Oscar-winning director of the documentary Man on Wire will also gain notice, as will the screenplay adaptation by Anthony McCarten; and the Focus Features film has a legitimate shot at top overall honors from both the Academy and the guilds.
Their courtship, before his diagnosis, is brief, and is the thinnest point of the film as we dash along from one obvious biopic story-beat to another. But time slows down at the first sign of trouble, when Hawking reaches down for a pen that’s fallen to the floor — Redmayne’s hand is ever so slightly gnarled as it grabs the implement, just the beginning of the powerfully subtle, nuanced transformation that Redmayne will go through as the form of ALS begins to grip Hawking’s already frail and gawky frame.
While developing his first major theory about black holes, he is also developing stronger symptoms that finally catch up when he trips over his own two feet in the Cambridge square, falls to the ground and smacks his forehead so hard that he wakes up in the hospital.
